What is
roadworker abuse?

Roadworker abuse is any behaviour or situation that makes people working on the road feel unsafe, threatened or at risk. It can happen deliberately or accidentally.

Verbal abuse

shouting, swearing, insults or offensive comments.

Threatening or intimidating behaviour

threats, aggressive gestures or behaviour designed to frighten you.

Aggressive or unsafe driving through roadworks

speeding, close passes, dangerous manoeuvres or deliberately driving towards workers.

Entering roadworks areas without permission

driving or walking into restricted areas, putting workers at risk.

Ignoring traffic management measures

Driving through cones, barriers, signs or temporary traffic controls.

Even when no one is physically hurt, these actions and situations can create fear, distress and an unsafe working environment for people carrying out essential work on our roads.

Shared evidence.
Stronger action.

Understanding the scale of abuse helps the industry respond.

The group will develop and maintain a share evidence base – the UK’s only central repository for such data where members and contributors can input and retrieve sector wide incident data and information for free.

Enabling organisations to understand the scale and nature of the incidents and to respond with clarity and consistency. It will identify and promote best practice in prevention, reporting and response.
